Inflammasomes are complex, multi-protein structures that assemble in the cytosol of specialized immune cells (e.g., macrophages and monocytes) following exposure to a danger signal, such as a pathogen- or damage-associated molecular pattern (PAMP/DAMP). Despite having essential roles in immune defense and tissue repair, inflammasomes contribute to the initiation and progression of many different diseases—especially chronic conditions.
